History of the Rodeo

So where did this all start? It depends on who you ask. Some say it started back in 1869 in Colorado when a few ranch-hands bet who would be the best at breaking wild horses, and then some.

We were curious enough to find the exact truth behind the camaraderie and competition that is iconic throughout the rodeo circuit, and here’s what we found.

The story of this illustrious sport was well presented on a post within the Texas State Historical Association. It mirrors many of the similar historians that have documented the beginning and growth of this legendary sport. Here’s a short synopsis:
“Rodeo is a sport that grew out of the cattle industry in the American West. Its roots reach back to the sixteenth century. The Spanish conquistadors and Spanish-Mexican settlers played a key role in the origin of rodeo with the introduction and propagation of horses and cattle in the Southwest.

After the Civil War, with the abundance of wild cattle in the Southwest and a market in the East, the era of the cattle drives, large ranches, and range cowboys began. Skills of the range cowboy led to competitive contests that eventually resulted in standard events for a rodeo.

Montana’s Rodeos ~ All a Part of the Western Heritage

Throughout the ranches that are available for purchase through our real estate firm that specializes in ranch lands for sale in Montana the spirit of the rodeo season is very much alive.

Thanks to a batch of bandits that turned a cattle drive around from Kansas back in the late 1880s, Montana is one of the most popular spots to compete in some of the richest and wildest rodeos in the USA.  (By the way, that piece of Montana history is worth the read, and we encourage you to share the story about how rodeos came to life in Montana with your kids this summer.)
