Central Montana You’ll enjoy a thorough variety of topographies in Central Montana starting with vast open plains near Great Falls and south of the Missouri River then east over to Judith Gap in the center of the state. South of Judith Gap to Billings along Hwy 87 is productive farmland. The SE portion of this region includes the state’s largest city of Billings. The south half has US Highway I-90 connecting Billings to Bozeman (home of Montana State University) and then on to Butte (the “mining city”) Glorious mountain ranges to the south are striking. Exploring the Beartooth, Absaroka, Gallatin and Madison Ranges are endless as they border the magnificent Yellowstone National Park. Completing this area is the state’s historic capital of Helena and the recreational & boating opportunities of Canyon Ferry Lake nearby.
